7.0.2 still doesn’t fix the canon reconnection issue. For those that don’t know if your canon camera goes to sleep or is disconnected you’ll need to restart the whole app before you can reconnect the camera. You can always set the camera to never sleep, but make sure you have plenty of batteries.

I decided to take things into my own hands and have come up with a script that restarts the internal capture core server that manages tether operations within Capture One. This means that within about 4 seconds of disconnecting your are ready to start shooting again, as opposed to 15+ seconds to quit and restart the whole app.

You can find the script here, but be sure you take note of the disclaimer.

Update

Capture Integration and teamwork photo have both blogged about my script. I hope you guys are finding it useful.

And I’m very impressed so far. A lot more testing before I load it into a capture station but its looking very promising.

Phase One launch new version of Capture One. I have been lucking enough to be

Phase One launch new version of Capture One.

I have been lucking enough to be involved in the beta program and its been an interesting process.

The Key Highlights.

CO7 Engine The new image engine is simply beautiful.

Noise suppression is much better than CO6 (though maybe not as good LightRoom).

The new gradient mask is great new addition and brushes seem improved.

I never really used Clarity tool much in CO6 but in CO7 it a lot nicer and subtler adjustments make it more useful.

OpenCL has been added for processing files and if you have a good GPU (like the GTX285 or Quadro 4000) you can see real benefits.

And for the Still Lifers. Live View for DSLRs.

The Key Lowlights.

Well, as with all new software, proceed with caution. In my testing I’ve found that at least with this .0 release its not been super stable. I’ve found that it more stable with 10.7.3 than 10.6.8. To the point I would recommend upgrading if you intend to put this into to production environment. Canon tethering is a bit painful disconnects are common. Its a bit of a memory hog. Seems like the code still needs optimising as it will slowly but surely increase its ram usage. Not a massive problem (photoshop been doing it for ages) but would be nice to have fixed for laptop users.

UPDATE

Phase One have release 7.0.1 which goes to resolve a lot of the issues see this CaptureIntegration blog post

I’ve been testing the Caldigit card for that past couple weeks. After getting the latest driver to install correctly the speeds of both the esata and usb3 seem good. I have tested it with a usb3 camera yet but I’ll be sure to test that soon.

This mac pro started life as a 2009 quad core that served as a server

This mac pro started life as a 2009 quad core that served as a server that never really worked that well. It had a intermittent fan issue that turned the fans on full. No amount of hardware testing would reveal what was the cause and when the quad core mini was released i replaced with that a 12tb thunderbolt raid and turned the previous raid into a vfs experiment (more on that later). Then a few weeks ago I learned about a firmware hack that loads the 2010 firmware on the 2009 tower and allows one to install W36xx series CPU. So a quick search on eBay revealed a second hand W3690 for a few hundred bucks which I promptly bought and installed. The tower has been running for 12 days now with stress tests that mimic the usual intensive use of a tethered shoot and the results have been great.
